AP Poll Reaction: I Projected Kentucky at No. 9 or Better. No. 12 Undervalues the Résumé.

By Clint Lloyd · · Opinion & analysis

I projected Kentucky to climb to No. 9 at minimum. After five straight wins and three consecutive SEC road victories, I believe the Wildcats have earned a place that high.

The new AP poll put Kentucky at No. 12, up from No. 15. The Wildcats are 6–1 after their 21–13 win at Oklahoma. That is progress in the rankings, but I think the résumé deserves more. [K1, K2]

Start with what Kentucky has done away from home. The Wildcats won at Texas A&M when the Aggies were ranked No. 9, then added SEC road victories at South Carolina and Oklahoma. [K3, K4] Those are different environments and different tests, and Kentucky has found a way to come through each one.

The distinction matters: Texas A&M was a top-10 opponent at kickoff. Oklahoma was receiving votes rather than ranked in the AP Top 25. Kentucky’s case rests on the full collection of wins, without needing to call every road opponent ranked. [K3, K4]

The Oklahoma result also showed how Kentucky is earning these victories. The Wildcats intercepted four passes and recorded five sacks. Jordan Castell supplied the decisive defensive score on a 41-yard interception return. [K2] Winning on the road requires plays that change possession and points that change the game. Kentucky delivered both.

I also think Indiana should have fallen farther. The Hoosiers dropped from No. 5 to No. 6 after losing 19–15 at home to Ohio State. [K1, K5] A close loss to a strong opponent deserves context. Still, my view is that a home defeat should have carried a greater ranking cost, particularly with teams such as Kentucky continuing to win difficult road games.

Miami deserves No. 1. Kentucky deserves more credit farther down the same ballot. For me, No. 9 was the minimum reasonable destination for the Wildcats this week.
